"The Comfort of Strangers" starring Christopher Walken, Rupert Everett, directed by Paul Schrader (1991). Dramatic. Screenplay by Harold Pinter adapted from a novel by Ian McEwan. An English couple spends an holiday in Venice to sort out their relationship. One evening, they lose their way looking for a restaurant, and a stranger invites them to accompany him. He plies them with wine and grotesque stories from his childhood. They leave disoriented, physically ill, and morally repelled. But, next day, when the stranger sees them in the piazza, they accept an invitation to his sumptuous flat.

His cousin Countess Serpieri falls in love with vile Austrian Lieutenant Franz Mahler, but the times are changing

"Death in Venice", starring Dirk Bogarde, Romolo Valli; directed by Luchino Visconti (1971). Dramatic. A CLASSIC - Based on the Thomas Mann novel; meticulous in recreating a Venetian atmosphere. Avant-garde composer Gustave Aschenbach (loosely based on Gustav Mahler) travels to the Venetian shore in search of repose. But he finds no peace there, for he soon develops a troubling attraction to an adolescent boy on vacation with his family. The onset of a deadly pestilence threatens them and represents the corruption compromising all ideals.

  • "Pane e tulipani" (Bread and tulips), by Silvio Soldini, starring Bruno Ganz, Lucia Maglietta, Antonio Catania (Italy, 2000). RECOMMENDED A nice and amusing story. A bit for "sake of", a bit for choice, Rosalba, young housewife, during a bus trip after she found herself alone and... forgotten in a highway café by her family. Offended, she finds herself hitch-hiking direct for Venice. Her adventure in Venice begins meeting fascinating people
  • "The Tourist" by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, shot in Venice and Paris in the spring of 2010. The impressive cast includes international stars and Italian popular actors. Starring: Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff, Rufus Sewell, Raoul Bova, Christian De Sica (USA, 2010). Action thriller ("The perfect trip, the perfect trap")
