The 18th century marked the greatest development of the Venetian painting and art in general. In Venice, the capital state of the Serenissima Republic, also the theatrical production flourished; numerous resident companies performed almost daily.
One of the most renowed playwriter was Carlo Goldoni, who in his comedies narrated the life of the noble patrician families and their servants; he also described the magnificent parties held in the villas, decorated with Tiepolo's art.
Ca' Rezzonico along the Grand Canal in Venice is one of such noble residences; now hosting the Museum of the 17th century, it houses frescos by Giambattista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico. Also Palazzo Labia now tha seat of the Italian broadcasting corporation retains one of the most valuable cycle of frescoes by Tiepolo. "Neptune offering gifts to Venice" is the glowing work at the Doge's Palace.
Besides the palazzi, also churches treasure frescoes by the Tiepolos: St.Mark's, San Stae, S.Polo, the Ospedaletto, San Francesco della Vigna, Scuola Grande dei Carmini, Scuola di San Rocco, in addition to some Venetian museums (Pinacoteca Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Gallerie dell'Accademia).
